Different Vessel types of the Indian Navy
If you are a naval aspirant you must be aware about the different types of vessels which the navy owns and also the example or one or two vessel of such type. Here is a list of such vessel types along with the examples of such vessels, this information has been gathered from sources on the internet for ease of the SSBCrack Readers.
  1. Aircraft Carrier: An aircraft carrier is a warship with a full-length flight deck and facilities for carrying, arming, deploying and recovering aircraft, acting as a seagoing airbase. Aircraft carriers allow a naval force to project airpower worldwide without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. Thus aircrafts can be flown from the sea. India’s Possession: Centaur-class aircraft carrier INS Viraat, Modified Kiev-class Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, and two Vikrant Class carriers. One is in service.
  2. Submarines: A submarine is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. Submarines are especially used to infiltrate enemy sea without being detected and destroy the major ships of the enemies. Indian Navy basically has two types of submarines, Attack Submarines and Ballistic Missile Submarine. They can be conventionally (diesel-electric) powered or Nuclear Powered. Attack Submarines or hunter-killer submarine is a submarine specifically designed for the purpose of attacking and sinking other submarines, surface combatants and merchant vessels. They are also used to protect friendly surface combatants and missile submarines. Some attack subs are also armed with cruise missiles mounted in vertical launch tubes, increasing the scope of their potential missions to include land targets. A ballistic missile submarine is a submarine equipped to launch submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) with nuclear warheads. Virtually all ballistic missile submarines are nuclear powered and are therefore nuclear submarines. India’s Possession: Attack Submarine: Chakra (Akula II)-class, Sindhughosh-class, and Shishumar-class submarines, out of which the first one is nuclear powered and other two are conventionally powered. India has Arihant class ballistic missile submarine which is nuclear powered. Totally 14 submarines are in service.
  3. Destroyer: A destroyer is a fast and maneuverable yet long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller, powerful, short-range attackers. India’s Possession: India owns three classes of Guided Missile Destroyers which are Rajput, Delhi, and Kolkata Class. A guided missile destroyer is a destroyer designed to launch guided missiles. Many are also equipped to carry out anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface operations. 8 are in service.
  4. Frigate: It is a warship with a mixed armament, generally lighter than a destroyer (in the US navy, heavier) and of a kind originally introduced for convoy escort work. They are armed with guided missiles and used as an escort for aircraft carrier. It is also used for shore bombardment and other combat functions. India’s Possession: India Possesses in total 4 classes of frigates and stealth ships, out of which Shivalik and Talwar class are multi-role stealth frigate and Brahmaputra and Godavari Class are Guided Missile Frigates. 15 are in service.
  5. Corvette: It is a fast, lightly armed warship which is generally smaller than a destroyer and larger than a coastal patrol craft often armed for antisubmarine operations and other combat operations. India’s Possession: India’s possess 4 classes of corvettes Kamorta, Kora, Khukri and Veer Class corvettes. 24 are in service.
  6. Mine countermeasure Vessels: It included Minesweeper. A minesweeper is a small naval warship designed to counter the threat posed by naval mines. Minesweepers keep waterways clear for shipping. India’s Possession: India possesses one class of mine sweeper which is Pondicherry class. 7 are in service.
  7. Amphibious transport dock: An amphibious transport dock, also called a landing platform/dock (LPD), is an amphibious warfare ship, a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions. The ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they also have the capability to operate transport helicopters. India Possesses one Austin class amphibious ship, from which only one is in service.
  8. Landing Ships: It is a naval vessel which is used to transport large number of vehicles, cargo and troops directly to the shore. India has 3 class of such ships Shardul class, Magar class and Kumbhir class out of them 9 ships are in service.
  9. Patrol Vessels: These are the small naval vessels and are used for patrolling the coastal area and to stop the law-breaking activities like smuggling, piracy and stopping illegal immigrants to enter the area. Patrol boats are also used in rescue operation. Indian Navy has 6 classes of petrol vessels, which are Saryu, Sukanya, Car-nicobar, Bangaram, Trinkat and Super Dvora Class. Out of these classes 31 patrol vessels are in service.
  10. Auxiliary Ship: An auxiliary ship is a naval ship which is designed to operate in any number of roles supporting combatant ships and other naval operations. Auxiliaries are not primary combatants, although they may have some limited combat capacity, usually of a self-defense nature. Auxiliaries are extremely important for navies of all sizes, as without them, the primary fleet vessels cannot be effective. Their roles include replenishment, transport and repair. Indian Navy has three classes Deepak, Jyoti and Aditya class which produce auxiliary ships. 4 such ships are in service.
  11. Research Vessels: A research vessel is a ship designed and equipped to carry out research at sea. Research vessels carry out a number of roles. One such role is survey. A survey vessel is any type of ship or boat that is used for mapping. India has two classes of such vessels whichare Sagardhwani and Sandhayak Classes. They produce various ships out of which 10 are in service.
  12. Training Vessels: Used for training Cadets and Officers, they are INS Tir, INS Varuna, INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini.
Note: In the above article Indian Navy’s possessions are termed in terms of classes. A single class can have many number of such type of vessel.

indian army technical entry for engineers

Engineering students and engineers have a great opportunity of joining the Indian Army through TGC entry and SSC Tech Entry. The candidates have to apply on the basis of their aggregate percentage of Engineering.  While only males can apply through TGC entry, both male and females can apply through SSC-Tech Entry.

Join Indian Army through Technical Entries
The details about these two entries are given below:
  • Who all can apply: Technical Graduates i.e. Engineers who are appearing i.e. last year students and who have passed engineering can apply. Males can apply for TGC and SSC Tech and females can apply for SSC Tech.
  • Educational qualification: Degree in BE/B.Tech or Appearing in Final year in the streams as notified by Indian Army.
  • Age: Males must lie between the age of 20-27 years (for both entries) and females must lie between 19-25 years at the time of course commencement.
  • Cutoff: Since no written test is there hence the call for SSB is made on the basis of cutoff percentage of qualifying exam i.e. engineering in this case. This cutoff is decided by the Army based on the applications received.
  • Commission: TGC entry will grant you a permanent commission and through SSC Tech entry as the name suggests you’ll be commissioned as a Short Service Commission Officer.

Well, for a change I’ll not be irritating you guys with what all I did in my SSB attempt(s), I won’t be telling you, what to do and what not to do in the SSB, SSBCRACK team is doing an excellent job in that context, keep up the good work. Now to begin with my introduction, I am just like you people, a keen defense aspirant, with immense passion to join forces and who looks nothing beyond that.

Recommended for IAF Flying Branch

Well, I gave my first SSB way back in March, 2010.Only preparation I did was with the help of my college mates(I was in the first year of my degree), they guided me about what all I will face over there, THAT’s IT. Frankly saying, I followed as they suggested but I acted as per what I am, totally, no half measures, no stepping back. I presented myself in my most natural manner. I got recommended as well. Got medically fit at first go, comfortably merit in, for 10+2 entry, the place was Bhopal. Now, let me tell you, this passion was not something I was born with or it wasn’t some sort of a dream as well till I was 18.I used to hear a lot of stories about INDIAN ARMED FORCES and that passion and desire to serve this organization was an iterative process since then, which kept on spreading inside me as the time passed. All said, I joined IMA as a GC, underwent training over there and that’s when things toppled. I suffered a bad back injury over there , which hampered not just my daily routine but my physical strength ceased too to carry me forward,  eventually I was medically boarded out as it wasn’t certain that I will get any better. I ain’t no asset, If I am not fit.
Now comes the part, to which I want to draw the attention of you’ll. I got back to my college, to that usual boring, monotonous casual routine and with a regret that will I be able to see myself in that shining uniform ever again. I might have did fairly well in my degree by being present over their physically but mentally I used to be @IMA all the time. I used to wake up every day recalling all that hectic run-outs, reporting, fall-ins…what not. Well, that passion was just burning with much more flare, all I used to quiz myself was, HOW can I be there again? Not to forget,  I kept on working on my body ever since that day till now and doing my best to keep myself in the best possible shape,  giving my body up to rigorous routine so that I shall never fall down to any sort of pain ever in my life. I subsequently went to three SSB’s, starting from my pre final year till march 2013 and let’s be honest and blunt with the results,  I failed. Friends , I want to tell you that, merely a dream and desire will not lead you to an excelling path and all those OLQ’s that they demand cannot be inculcated within a day or two OR by taking any sort of coaching/guidance whatever you may call it. It comes from within you. You eat, sleep, play that’s all about SSB, what you do naturally. That zeal must be within you to grasp things,  to be spontaneous,  to be pro-active,  to be self-aware and utmost important factor,  COMMON SENSE. You have got to realize that if armed forces is where you want to be in,  you have to live by that thought everyday,  every moment and not to forget gearing yourself with all the essentials which are necessary to perform well and what tops that list is Self belief. Keep introspecting yourself,  not just before SSB’s,  but otherwise as well,  as I said,  it’s an iterative approach,  the more you strive for it,  further you will you see yourself progressing towards your dream. To sum up, every action of yours will be the reflection of your dedication and sufferance you have hailed to realize this dream of yours to wear stars or wings. So stop questioning others, on how you should act at the SSB, you know it very well because if you really want to, just take a leap of faith and success is awaiting you.
Just for the sake of making you all realize what all I gained from all these above experiences of mine,  I got recommended again in my 5th attempt,  for CDS F(P), Flying Fit and will be at AFA soon.
Just remember one thing “What you aspire, shall you achieve”. Persistence and consistence will assist you in your journey to the job that commands highest respect in the world-An Officer in the Indian Armed forces. (An excerpt taken from the book-My appointment with a Psychologist)

Navy UES Group Discussion

Initially, they give us a brief introduction about Indian navy following motivational lecture. Our GD start at 10.30am sharp ,they have made a batch of 10 student each . Before our GD start, interviewer officer made us understand about the topic and what we have to talk in the GD.

Our topic was “advantage and disadvantage of social networking sites”. GD started and ends, and out 10 students, only 6 students were able to clear. It was easy to clear as interviewer was looking the way you talk and not what you talk; some unwanted people also got selected in GD.

Preliminary SSB Interview for Indian Navy UES 2014

Many question were with my friends, example are below

  1. Draw the map of India and plot it,
  2. Who is prime minister and president of Bhutan, china, japan, sir lanka, south Africa and many others  ?
  3. Capital of all state of India.
  4. Tell me five state of South Africa and name capital of each.
  5. Name the different river and state form which they are originate.
I was very clear in interview, when I was able to answer . I was straight forward and said sir, I don’t know. During interview, interviewer seems to be frustrated because there were only three officers for interview process and students were nearby 70.
As I was very confident and my voice level were up to  the mark during interview , then also in mixed feeling as my interview was shortest of all. Overall it was a great experience and made some new friends and I was never nervous during interview. Now fingers crossed for getting short listed for ssb.
Don’t be nervous in GD and try to speak at least 3 times. You can speak in hindi and English both languages were allowed, but better to stick with English. Before coming for ues campus interview specially for  Indian navy plzz clear your basic technical subject concept specially of radar for electronic and Telecommunication, for pure electronic student ,diode , rectifier, thyrester etc  and for general knowledge go through all capital of  Indian state and  capital of all. Countries which are around India and prime minister and president of all the countries, in short, fit the world map in your brain.

Thank you every one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Hope it will help you in upcoming interview.
