In a significant step toward modernizing the Indian Air Force (IAF) and reinforcing self-reliance in the aerospace sector, Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh presented the report of the Empowered Committee for Capability Enhancement of the IAF to Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on March 3, 2025. The report outlines key strategic areas and recommendations for phased implementation, ensuring that the IAF attains its capability enhancement goals in an optimal manner.

The Empowered Committee, constituted under the directions of the Raksha Mantri, conducted a comprehensive examination of operational requirements and emerging challenges to formulate a structured roadmap for short, medium, and long-term advancements in air power. The Committee was chaired by the Defence Secretary and included the Vice Chief of Air Staff, Secretary (Defence Production), Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Director General (Acquisition), and Deputy Chief of Air Staff as Member Secretary.

A key highlight of the report is the emphasis on bolstering ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in the aerospace sector. It underscores the necessity of increased collaboration between the private sector, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to accelerate indigenous technological advancements. This initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of reducing dependency on foreign defense imports while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commended the Committee’s efforts and directed that the proposed recommendations be implemented within a time-bound framework. The report’s findings are expected to drive transformative changes in the IAF, including fleet modernization, advanced combat capabilities, integrated air defense systems, and indigenous technological innovations.
With the recommendations set for structured execution, this development marks a crucial milestone in India’s pursuit of an advanced and self-reliant air force, ensuring enhanced operational readiness and strategic superiority in the years to come.
