Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D’Cunha, Director General and Colonel Commandant of the Army Air Defence (AAD), recently visited the Air Defence units of the 33rd Armoured Division, known as the “Dot On Target” Division. During his visit, Lt Gen D’Cunha engaged in discussions focusing on the contemporary and emerging operational environment, evolving aerial threats, and corresponding mitigation strategies.
He commended all ranks for their high standards of training and their innovative approaches toward achieving operational excellence.
In recent statements, Lt Gen D’Cunha has emphasized the increasing importance of counter-drone strategies in modern warfare. Drawing lessons from recent global conflicts, he highlighted the necessity for advanced surveillance systems capable of detecting small drones and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manage the complexities of modern air threats.
The AAD is actively pursuing the acquisition of Low-Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR) and smart ammunition to enhance its defensive capabilities. Additionally, plans are underway to induct new indigenous anti-aircraft guns to replace outdated systems, reflecting the Corps’ commitment to modernization and self-reliance.
The 33rd Armoured Division, based at Hisar Military Station, plays a crucial role in India’s defence strategy. Lt Gen D’Cunha’s visit underscores the Army’s dedication to continuous assessment and enhancement of its air defence readiness, ensuring that units remain adept at countering evolving aerial threats.
