Israeli Forces Withdraw from South Lebanon in Ceasefire Implementation

Israeli forces have initiated their first withdrawal from the town of Al-Khiam in southern Lebanon, marking a significant moment in the ongoing ceasefire arrangement between Israel and Lebanon. This withdrawal, which comes in accordance with the terms of the ceasefire, was closely monitored by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). General Erik Kurilla, the commander of CENTCOM, was on-site during the operation, where he praised the withdrawal as a crucial initial step towards achieving a lasting cessation of hostilities in the region.

In a statement released by CENTCOM, General Kurilla emphasized the importance of this development, stating that it lays the groundwork for further progress in maintaining peace. He attended the implementation and monitoring headquarters as Israeli Defense Forces withdrew and the Lebanese Armed Forces assumed control of the area.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed support for the deployment of troops in the Khiam and Marjayoun areas, calling it a fundamental step toward enhancing the Lebanese military’s presence in the south. Mikati further commended the army’s efforts to establish stability in that region and highlighted the significance of this deployment in relation to the ceasefire agreement.

The Israeli military confirmed that its 7th Brigade had successfully completed its mission in Al-Khiam. According to their statement, the coordinated efforts with the United States have facilitated the transition of security responsibilities to the Lebanese Armed Forces and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission active in the area.

Following the developments, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, reiterating the United States’ commitment to supporting the ceasefire. Austin pointed out the potential of the ceasefire to foster a stable environment, allowing residents on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border to return safely to their communities.

Since late September, Israel had escalated its military actions in southern Lebanon in response to increased hostilities initiated by Hezbollah, which had intensified following Hamas’ significant attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The ceasefire, which took effect on November 27, has remained largely intact despite accusations of violations from both sides.

As part of the ceasefire agreement, it has been outlined that the Lebanese army, along with UN peacekeepers, will continue their deployment in southern Lebanon while the Israeli army proceeds with its planned withdrawal over a period of 60 days. Additionally, the agreement stipulates that Hezbollah will also withdraw its forces to a position north of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers from the border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in the southern part of the country. The successful implementation of these provisions will be critical in maintaining peace and security in the region.
