Nepal’s Army Chief Discusses Defence Cooperation and Receives Drones from India During Delhi Visit

In a pivotal meeting in Delhi, Nepali Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel engaged in comprehensive discussions with Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. The talks marked a significant moment in defense cooperation between the two nations, reflecting a commitment to bolstering capabilities in response to evolving security dynamics in the region.

A key highlight of the discussions was India’s provision of target practice drones to Nepal, intended to enhance the latter’s defence training capabilities markedly. In addition to the drones, advanced medical equipment was also handed over to strengthen Nepal’s field hospital systems, thereby improving operational readiness in various scenarios. These gestures underline India’s ongoing commitment to advancing Nepal’s defence modernisation and capacity-building efforts.

On the second day of his four-day official visit, General Sigdel honored the sacrifice of Indian soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial. His visit was further distinguished by a ceremonial guard of honour at South Block, highlighting the respectful diplomatic ties between the two armies.

The meeting also enabled General Sigdel to interact with several senior military officials from India, during which he gained valuable insights into India’s evolving security strategies and innovations being developed by the Army Design Bureau. The discussions extended to the pressing regional security challenges faced by both nations, promoting an agenda of mutual collaboration that sets the stage for future joint initiatives.

General Sigdel’s itinerary included meetings with high-profile Indian officials such as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Anticipating additional significance, he is slated to meet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and will be conferred with the honorary rank of Indian Army General during a ceremonial event at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The discussions and agreements made during this visit are aimed not only at strengthening bilateral defense cooperation but also at addressing regional security concerns and exploring industrial partnerships that align with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Significantly, General Sigdel’s visit is considered crucial for tackling the longstanding issue of Gorkha recruitment into the Indian Army, which serves as a testament to the deep-rooted importance of military ties between India and Nepal.
