Madikeri: In a significant development following derogatory remarks made by a lawyer against celebrated Indian Army figures Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and Padma Bhushan Gen. K.S. Thimayya on social media, the Kodagu Sarvajanangada Okkuta has announced a peaceful bandh in the region. The protest is scheduled for tomorrow from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM, aimed at expressing public outrage and seeking the lawyer’s exile from Kodagu.
During a press conference held yesterday, Rajiv Bopaiah, the Convenor of Kodagu Sarvajanangada Okkuta, emphasized the increasing unrest caused by the lawyer’s comments. He asserted that such statements are not only disrespectful to the valor of Indian Army heroes but also threaten to disrupt the peace within the community. The organization expressed its readiness to engage in a legal battle to address the situation.
Bopaiah highlighted the collective sentiment among the local population, noting that the response to the lawyer’s remarks has been overwhelmingly negative. He reiterated the importance of honoring the legacy of the Army’s distinguished leaders and preserving the region’s harmony.
Support for the bandh has been robust, with Nagendra Prasad, President of the Chamber of Commerce, confirming that several organizations are backing the initiative. He stated that all business establishments in the area are expected to close during the protest hours to show solidarity.
Key figures from various associations also attended the press meet. Zaheer, Vice-President of the Hotel Association, along with Jagadish, President of the Bunts Association, and Medappa, President of the Owners and Drivers Association, conveyed their support for the bandh, highlighting a unified stance against any actions perceived as disrespectful to national icons.
The Kodagu Sarvajanangada Okkuta is urging community members to come together during this period of protest, reinforcing their commitment to uphold the dignity of revered national figures and maintain peace in the district.
