Oshkosh Corporation’s subsidiary, Pratt Miller Defense, has announced a significant multi-year contract to produce its innovative Trackless Moving Targets (TMT) for the marksmanship proficiency programs of the US Army and National Guard. The TMT system consists of highly mobile armored drones that employ advanced zone-based hit detection along with GPS-based maneuver technology. This capability facilitates reactive movements during live-fire scoring, capturing the dynamics of real-world combat scenarios.
Designed to mimic the size of a standard infantry fighting vehicle, the TMT can operate both individually and in groups, enhancing its mobility and allowing for easier transport between training ranges. This flexibility not only optimizes the training experience but also reduces the costs associated with having multiple targets on the range, which is crucial in today’s budget-conscious military environment.
The distribution of these robotic platforms is set to begin in the summer of 2025, marking a new chapter in military training capabilities. Jim Fontaine, Executive Director of Pratt Miller Defense Robotics, expressed pride in partnering with the US Army to develop the TMT training systems. He highlighted that the initiative originated from a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program initiated 12 years ago, which has undergone extensive evolution based on continuous collaboration with soldiers and Army leadership.
Fontaine noted the Army’s commitment to refining the specifications for the TMT, ensuring it aligns closely with soldiers’ feedback and needs. He emphasized that the focus throughout this development process has been on maintaining safety, achieving seamless integration with the Army’s range software, and ensuring the long-term durability of the equipment. The implementation of this technology has reportedly led to significant improvements in training effectiveness, garnering positive responses from soldiers who appreciate the enhanced preparation it offers.
As the military landscape continues to evolve, Pratt Miller Defense’s TMT is poised to play a vital role in cultivating readiness and efficacy within the ranks of the US armed forces. The upcoming deployment of this system underscores the increasing reliance on advanced technology to enhance military training and operational preparedness.
