Russia Bombs Anti-Government Forces in Syria Amid Major Offensive on Aleppo

In a significant escalation of activity in the ongoing Syrian civil war, Russian military forces announced on Friday that their air force has conducted strikes against anti-government factions in Syria. This move is part of efforts to counter what Russian officials describe as a major offensive launched by “extremists” targeting the city of Aleppo, one of Syria’s largest urban centers.

Reports indicate that jihadist groups, along with their Turkish-backed allies, have intensified their assault, reaching the outskirts of Aleppo on the same day. The clashes that have ensued are being characterized as some of the most intense and deadly in recent memory during the protracted conflict.

According to Russian state news agencies, the country’s air force has been actively conducting rocket-bomb attacks aimed at dismantling the operational capabilities of these armed groups. A spokesperson from Russia’s Defense Ministry’s Reconciliation Centre for Syria claimed that the targeted strikes have hit a variety of critical locations, including equipment, manpower concentrations, control points, warehouses, and artillery positions utilized by the so-called terrorists. The spokesperson asserted that over the course of the last 24 hours alone, 200 militants had been “destroyed”; however, this figure could not be independently verified by AFP.

Oleg Ignasyuk, the deputy head of the Russian reconciliation center, reiterated that the military operations to thwart what he termed the aggression of the extremists are ongoing. This assertive stance underscores Moscow’s critical role as the primary military ally to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Since Russia’s intervention in the conflict in 2015, it has played a pivotal role in supporting Assad’s government, significantly shifting the balance of power in the Syrian civil war.
