Netanyahu Defies ICC Arrest Warrant Over Gaza War Conduct, Calls It ‘Dark Day’ for Nations

In a defiant response to the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing an arrest warrant against him, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that this action would not hinder Israel’s defense efforts. In a video statement released on Thursday, Netanyahu stated, “No outrageous anti-Israel decision will prevent us –- and it will not prevent me –- from continuing to defend our country in every way.” He asserted that Israel would remain steadfast and would not succumb to international pressure.

The ICC’s warrant targets Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, accusing them of committing “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” due to their conduct during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu characterized the ICC’s decision as a “dark day in the history of nations,” further claiming, “The International Criminal Court in The Hague, which was established to protect humanity, has today become the enemy of humanity.” He dismissed the allegations as “utterly baseless.”

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has escalated since October 2023, when a surprise attack by Hamas led to the deaths of 1,206 people in Israel, the majority being civilians, as reported by AFP citing Israeli official figures. In retaliation, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have reportedly resulted in over 44,056 deaths, according to health ministry statistics from the Hamas-run territory, the accuracy of which is acknowledged by the United Nations. The UN has raised alarms about a catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, highlighting the severe shortages of food and medical supplies that could lead to famine.

The ICC has outlined “reasonable grounds” to ascertain that both Netanyahu and Gallant bear “criminal responsibility” for the alleged war crime of employing starvation as a method of warfare, alongside accusations of committing crimes against humanity, which include murder and persecution.

In his statement, Netanyahu condemned the court’s accusations as “fictitious crimes,” alleging that they distract from genuine atrocities occurring against Israel and other nations globally. In an ironic twist, he also ridiculed the ICC’s warrant issued for Mohammed Deif, the commander of Hamas’ military wing, suggesting it was absurd to warrant for someone presumed dead following an Israeli airstrike last July, noting that Hamas has not confirmed his death.

As tensions continue to rise amidst the ongoing violence, Israel’s leadership remains unyielding in their defense narratives, indicating that international legal challenges from bodies like the ICC will not alter their strategic operations in the current conflict.
