Ukraine Deploys New “Pernach” Remote-Controlled Weapon Station to Enhance Military Capabilities

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step forward in bolstering the capabilities of its armed forces by officially approving the operational deployment of the domestically-developed “Pernach” remotely controlled weapon station (RCWS). This innovative system is equipped with a 7.62mm turret-mounted machine gun, enabling operators to engage enemy forces from a secure and sheltered location, thereby enhancing the safety of personnel while conducting military operations.

The Pernach RCWS is designed with a comprehensive control console that facilitates remote operations. Additionally, it employs first-person view goggles that provide operators with a real-time video feed from the system’s camera, ensuring they can accurately assess the battlefield and make informed decisions while remaining at a safe distance from potential threats.

One of the key advantages of the Pernach is its compatibility with a variety of armored vehicles and fixed platforms, allowing for flexible deployment across different military contexts. Once operational, the weapon station is expected to act as a force multiplier, significantly enhancing the operational effectiveness of Ukrainian forces, particularly in countering the capabilities of the Russian military.

The versatility of the Pernach RCWS is underscored by its modular design. This allows for customization based on specific mission requirements, enabling the integration of additional weaponry such as grenade launchers and anti-tank missiles. This adaptability ensures that soldiers are equipped to handle diverse combat scenarios, making the Pernach effective not only against ground threats but also aerial targets.

The introduction of the Pernach into military service is a clear indication of Ukraine’s commitment to fortifying its defense capabilities through the development of locally manufactured weapon systems. In line with this initiative, the Ukrainian defense ministry has also approved the provision of robotic personnel and cargo transporters to the military. In the first half of 2024 alone, the ministry reported the induction of 480 new weapons and types of military equipment, which included an array of ammunition, electronic warfare systems, and tools for demining.

This strategic move to enhance domestic weapons deployment reflects Ukraine’s broader ambition to strengthen its military resilience and operational readiness in the face of ongoing conflict, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in defense production and innovation.
