India and Japan Sign MOI to Enhance Indian Navy’s Stealth Technology

In a landmark agreement aimed at bolstering naval defenses, India and Japan have formalized a Memorandum of Implementation (MOI) that focuses on enhancing the stealth technology employed by the Indian Navy. This crucial technological advancement impacts warships, submarines, and other associated systems, and has been the subject of discussions for nearly three years prior to this agreement.

The signing took place at the Embassy of India in Tokyo on 15 November 2024, involving representatives from both the Indian and Japanese governments. In its official announcement, the Indian Navy highlighted the co-development of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna, or UNICORN, which is a state-of-the-art mast designed for installation on Indian Navy ships.

The UNICORN mast stands out due to its ability to consolidate multiple communication systems into a singular, streamlined radar dome, commonly referred to as a radome. This integration is pivotal as it not only optimizes operational efficiency but also significantly minimizes the radar cross-section of naval vessels. Consequently, this reduction enhances the stealth features of ships, allowing for operations to be conducted with lesser electronic signatures—an essential advantage in contemporary naval warfare.

The Indian Navy has emphasized that the implementation of the UNICORN mast will markedly upgrade the stealth capabilities of its fleet, enabling it to maintain a strategic upper hand in various maritime scenarios. This development reflects a growing collaboration between India and Japan in defense technology, emphasizing shared interests in safeguarding maritime security and enhancing overall operational readiness in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

As both nations continue to strengthen their defense ties, this MOI marks a critical step in fostering innovation and improving the tactical capabilities of the Indian Navy, showcasing the potential for collaborative efforts in advancing military technology.
