DRDO to Develop Astra MkIV Missile for Enhanced IAF Capability in Air Combat

The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced plans to advance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF) by developing the Astra MkIV air-to-air missile. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance India’s beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) portfolio, catering to the evolving needs of modern air combat scenarios.

Currently, the IAF is utilizing the Astra MkI missile, which has already proven its effectiveness in providing an edge over potential adversaries, particularly in combat situations. The Astra MkI has established itself as a dependable BVRAAM, enabling the IAF to engage hostile aircraft with increased confidence.

In addition to the Astra MkI, the Astra MkII missile is in the final stages of development and is expected to be completed shortly. This next-generation missile aims to improve upon its predecessor’s capabilities by offering enhanced range and accuracy, leveraging recent advancements in missile technology. The streamlined research and development process associated with the Astra MkII is expected to minimize the time and resources needed for design validation, further complementing the missile’s introduction into the IAF’s arsenal.

Following these developments, attention now turns to the Astra MkIII, which is currently under development, and will serve as a stepping stone towards the anticipated Astra MkIV. The Astra MkIV is designed with high-speed stealth platforms in mind, marking a significant leap in air-to-air missile technology. According to insiders in the defense sector, DRDO has initiated preliminary steps to define the technological requirements necessary for the development of Astra MkIV, with expectations for the missile to become operational by the late 2030s.

This strategic shift not only bolsters the IAF’s operational capabilities but also positions India as a competitive player in the global defense landscape. As the DRDO continues to innovate and expand its missile systems, the Astra series is set to play a pivotal role in the IAF’s ability to secure air superiority in future conflict scenarios.
