Indian Army Launches Successful Volleyball Coaching Program for Girls in Jammu

In a bid to empower young girls through sports, the Indian Army has unveiled a volleyball coaching program that has already shown significant impact in the Jammu region. Initiated on August 29, 2024, the program was designed not only to enhance athletic skills but also to instill confidence and leadership qualities among participants hailing from Rajouri and Poonch.

According to a Defence Spokesperson in Jammu, the program began with 30 enthusiastic girls who underwent rigorous training led by experienced coaches affiliated with Jammu and Kashmir sports authorities, supplemented by physiotherapists. The training curriculum was comprehensive, covering the fundamentals of volleyball, game strategies, and essential physical fitness routines.

The results of the program have been impressive. From the initial group, 19 girls successfully participated in various district-level tournaments across three age categories—Under-19, Under-17, and Under-14. Their talent and dedication allowed 15 of these girls to qualify for the Jammu Division-level trials, with eight eventually securing spots to represent Jammu Division at the state level.

The culmination of this initiative was marked by the selection of seven girls to represent Jammu and Kashmir at national volleyball tournaments. This representation includes three players in the U-19 category, one in U-17, and three in the U-14 category.

Beyond the realm of sports, this initiative has sparked a notable cultural shift regarding the perception of women and sports in the region. By empowering these young athletes, the Indian Army is not just developing their sporting capabilities, but also equipping them with vital life skills that can pave the way for future opportunities.

This volleyball coaching program is a testament to the Indian Army’s commitment to community development and gender equality. It highlights the transformative power of sports, illustrating how they can act as a catalyst for social change in underdeveloped areas, reinforcing the importance of investing in the potential of young women in the region.
