India Hands Over Two Fast Interceptor Boats to Mozambique Navy

In a significant development strengthening maritime cooperation between India and Mozambique, India has officially handed over two fast interceptor craft (FICs) to the Mozambique Navy. The handover ceremony took place in Nacala on November 8, as confirmed by the Indian Navy two days later. The transaction marks another step in India’s commitment to support Mozambique in enhancing its maritime security capabilities.

The two newly acquired vessels, identified by their Indian naval pennants T 229 and T 238, were unloaded from the Indian Navy’s landing ship INS Gharial. Photographs released by the Indian Navy showcase the two Solas Marine FICs, which are designed for high-speed maritime operations.

According to the Indian Navy, these fast interceptor boats are water-jet propelled, enabling them to achieve a top speed of 45 knots. They offer a range of 200 nautical miles when traveling at a cruising speed of 12 knots. Each FIC is designed to accommodate a crew of five and is equipped with machine guns, as well as bullet-resistant cabins, enhancing both their offensive and defensive capabilities.

The introduction of these FICs is expected to provide crucial support to the Mozambique government in its ongoing efforts to combat maritime terrorism and address the persistent insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province. The region has been plagued by violence, leading to urgent calls for improved security measures.

This latest contribution from India follows its earlier assistance to Mozambique, which included the donation of two FICs (designated T 310 and T 311) in December 2021 and two larger ex-Indian Coast Guard patrol vessels in 2019. These ongoing collaborations reflect India’s dedication to fostering naval capabilities in Mozambique and enhancing overall regional maritime security.
