US Warplanes Target Houthi Weapons Storage in Yemen Amid Ongoing Maritime Threats

US warplanes conducted a series of airstrikes on Saturday night targeting advanced weapons storage facilities operated by Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to a statement from the Pentagon. These facilities were reportedly used to store various weapons that have been employed against military and civilian vessels navigating the critically strategic waterways of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Houthi-run Al Masirah television network reported that the strikes focused on the southern Al Sabeen district of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Eyewitnesses indicated that the area experienced intense aircraft activity along with significant explosions throughout various locations in the capital.

Since January, both the United States and the United Kingdom have ramped up their military actions against Houthi targets in Yemen, a response spurred by the rebels’ assaults on shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These strikes are particularly notable given their timing and context, with the Houthis stating that their maritime attacks serve to express solidarity with Palestinians amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict.

The implications of these strikes are significant, as disruptions to maritime traffic in the Red Sea threaten a pivotal route essential for global trade, which sees about 12 percent of worldwide shipping pass through these waters. Over the past year, Houthi forces have launched more than 100 attacks on vessels, resulting in the death of four sailors, the sinking of two ships, and the hijacking of another vessel, whose crew remains detained.

The latest escalation follows remarks from Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, who recently criticized US President-elect Donald Trump for his support of Israel. Al-Houthi claimed that normalization agreements between several Arab nations and Israel, facilitated by Trump, have not resolved the Middle East conflict and predicted further failures in Trump’s potential second term.

As hostilities in the region continue, the international community remains concerned about the ongoing volatility in Yemen and surrounding waterways, which directly impacts global trade and security.
