Finland to Acquire Innovative TREMOS Mortar System from Patria
Helsinki, Finland – The Finnish Defence Forces have announced the acquisition of a new advanced modular 120 mm mortar system, known as TREMOS, from domestic defense contractor Patria. Described as a “mobile version of traditional mortar,” TREMOS is set to enhance the capabilities of Finland’s combat support operations.
Developed in collaboration with the Finnish Defence Forces, this innovative mortar system seamlessly integrates traditional heavy mortar weapons into a modular carriage that can be mounted on military trucks. The design is not only versatile but also scalable, allowing for installation on a variety of vehicles to meet diverse operational needs.
Key features of TREMOS include its ability to utilize existing mortar tubes, ammunition, and ballistic tables, as well as new heavy mortars. Impressively, the system can be operational within just 60 seconds of reaching the firing position, offering significant advantages in mobility and response time. TREMOS can function independently or as part of a coordinated mobile firing unit.
Patria’s Director Lauri Pauniaho emphasized that the primary objective behind TREMOS was to enhance the mobility of traditional mortar equipment. Following the approval of initial concepts, the first prototype was developed within a year for comprehensive proof-of-concept tests. According to Patria VP Jussi Järvinen, the system has successfully undergone testing, and a pre-series agreement has already been signed, marking a significant milestone in the project’s timeline.
With decades of experience in weapon system development, including the Patria AMOS and Patria NEMO mortar systems, Patria aims to provide the Finnish Army with advanced capabilities suited for modern warfare.
The TREMOS mortar system is scheduled for delivery to the Finnish Army in 2025, promising to bolster Finland’s defense readiness in the years to come.
