Suicide Bomber Strikes Checkpoint in Western Pakistan, Killing Eight

MIR ALI, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — A suicide bomber detonated explosives at a checkpoint near the town of Mir Ali in western Pakistan on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals and injuring five others, local officials reported.

The attack was executed from the back of a motorbike rickshaw, as the bomber targeted a security checkpoint. Among those killed were four police officers, two members of a state paramilitary force, and two civilians. The incident occurred close to the border with Afghanistan, raising concerns about the escalating militancy in the region.

“We have confirmed that among the five injured, three are in critical condition and have been transferred to a local military hospital,” a police officer, who requested anonymity, disclosed to AFP.

The assault was claimed by a lesser-known militant group calling itself “Aswad ul-Harb.” This incident follows a recent spike in violent attacks in Pakistan, particularly after the Taliban reclaimed power in Afghanistan in 2021. Islamabad has accused hostile groups of finding refuge across the border, intensifying security concerns.

Earlier this week, another attack on a checkpost by the Pakistani Taliban resulted in the deaths of 10 police officers, highlighting a troubling trend of increasing violence. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, last year marked the deadliest period for suicide attacks since 2014, with 29 registered incidents claiming 329 lives.

Authorities are on high alert as the country grapples with resurging militancy, which poses significant challenges to security forces and the civilian populace alike.
