At a seminar held in New Delhi on June 26, 2024, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan reaffirmed India’s commitment to its nuclear doctrine based on the principles of ‘No First Use & Massive Retaliation’. The seminar, organized by the Centre for Air Power Studies and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), focused on “Nuclear Strategy: Contemporary Developments and Future Possibilities”.
In his keynote address, General Chauhan discussed the evolving nature and characteristics of conventional warfare and stressed that nuclear threats are becoming increasingly prominent in the global geopolitical arena. He advocated for profound contemplation on the development of new doctrines, reimagining deterrence strategies, and enhancing the security of nuclear command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, information, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4I2SR) infrastructure.
Highlighting the urgency of adapting to contemporary threats, General Chauhan also released the ‘Asian Defence Review 2024’, which addresses ‘Emerging Technologies and Changing Dimensions of Threats to India’. This publication seeks to guide policy-makers in reshaping defense strategies to effectively respond to modern challenges and threats.
The seminar marks a significant moment in India’s defense discourse, reinforcing its strategic posture while navigating the complex landscape of international nuclear policy.
