India-Japan Maritime Exercise JIMEX 24 Kicks Off in Yokosuka

The Indian Navy’s indigenous Stealth Frigate, INS Shivalik, has docked at Yokosuka, Japan, marking the commencement of the eighth edition of the bilateral Japan – India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX 2024). Since its inception in 2012, JIMEX has served as a platform for enhancing maritime cooperation between the two nations.

Upon its arrival, INS Shivalik received a hearty welcome from Vice Admiral ITO Hiroshi, Commander of the JMSDF Yokosuka District, and Sibi George, the Indian Ambassador to Japan. This year’s exercise promises to bolster the naval relationship between India and Japan, focusing on advanced naval operations and strategic interoperability.

JIMEX 24 includes extensive harbor and sea phases. Following the harbor activities, the sea phase will see the two navies engage in sophisticated war fighting exercises. These operations are designed to enhance skills in various domains including surface, sub-surface, and aerial combat scenarios.

Representing the Indian Navy is the INS Shivalik, while the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has deployed the Guided Missile Destroyer JS Yugiri for the exercise. Additionally, integral helicopters from both navies will participate, adding an aerial dimension to the drills.

Over the years, JIMEX has expanded in scope and complexity, providing valuable opportunities for both navies to share best practices and refine operational strategies. This year’s exercise underscores the ongoing commitment of India and Japan to ensuring maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the strategic significance of their partnership.
