Secretary Ex-Servicemen Welfare Visits Sikkim, Strengthens Support for Veterans under ‘Samadhan Campaign’

The Secretary ESW also visited the 17th Mountain Division of the Indian Army, where he was received by Major General Amit Kabthiyal, the General Officer Commanding (GoC).

In a significant outreach initiative under the ‘Samadhan Campaign’, Dr. Niten Chandra, Secretary of the Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare (ESW), visited the border areas of Sikkim on May 13, 2024, to assess and enhance the welfare schemes for veterans in the region.

This visit marks a pivotal step in bolstering the financial security and well-being of ex-servicemen and their families.

During his visit, Dr. Chandra issued directives to the Rajya Sainik Board and Zila Sainik Boards to establish Common Service Centres and PM Jan Aushadhi Kendras across Sikkim.

These centers, to be operated by ex-servicemen, will provide essential services and affordable medicines, thereby enhancing economic opportunities for veterans while serving the local community.

In Gangtok, Dr. Chandra met with Sikkim’s Chief Secretary, Shri V.B. Pathak, to discuss a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening welfare measures for ex-servicemen. They explored initiatives to involve veterans in agricultural projects, with the state horticulture department’s support.

Plans were laid out to form cooperative groups of ex-servicemen to cultivate high-value crops such as avocados, oranges, kiwis, and passion fruits, promoting sustainable agriculture and financial independence.

The Secretary ESW also visited the 17th Mountain Division of the Indian Army, where he was received by Major General Amit Kabthiyal, the General Officer Commanding (GoC).

During his tour, Dr. Chandra inspected various defense establishments, including the ECHS Polyclinic, Sparsh Suvidha Kendra, and Veterans Suvidha Kendra, reviewing the services and facilities provided to veterans.

Interacting directly with the veterans, Dr. Chandra inquired about their experiences and issues related to the SPARSH pension system, healthcare, and resettlement. His engagement provided a platform for veterans to voice their concerns and receive immediate assistance and guidance.

Major General SBK Singh, Director General of Resettlement, elaborated on various programs designed to enhance the skills and competencies of defense veterans. He highlighted entrepreneurship models that could facilitate their smooth transition into civilian life and ensure sustainable livelihoods.

The Samadhan Campaign event saw a large turnout of veterans from across the region, reflecting the initiative’s broad reach and impact. The campaign provided assistance on a range of issues pertinent to ex-servicemen, reinforcing the government’s commitment to their welfare.
