DRDO Successfully Tests Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo System

Equipped with a range of advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system, SMART is a canister-based missile system with a parachute-based release mechanism.

In a significant leap forward for India’s maritime defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major milestone with the successful flight-testing of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system.

The test, conducted at around 0830 hrs on May 01, 2024, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, marks a significant advancement in anti-submarine warfare technology.

The SMART system represents the next generation of missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery systems, developed to bolster the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Designed and developed by DRDO, this cutting-edge system aims to extend the range and effectiveness of lightweight torpedoes beyond conventional limits.

Equipped with a range of advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system, SMART is a canister-based missile system with a parachute-based release mechanism.

The successful test validated the functionality of various state-of-the-art mechanisms, such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control.

During the test, the missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, showcasing the system’s versatility and adaptability in different operational scenarios.

The flawless execution of the test underscores the technological prowess and innovation driving India’s defense research and development efforts.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh hailed the successful test of SMART as a significant achievement for the nation’s defense establishment.

He commended DRDO and its industry partners for their dedication and expertise, emphasizing that the development of SMART will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in safeguarding maritime interests.

Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, and Chairman DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, praised the collaborative efforts of the entire SMART team in realizing this milestone.

He urged the team to continue striving for excellence and innovation in their pursuit of advancing India’s defense capabilities.

The successful flight-test of the SMART system represents a landmark moment in India’s quest for self-reliance in defense technology. With its advanced capabilities and cutting-edge features, SMART is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s maritime defense posture and ensuring the security of its maritime interests in the years to come.
