DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight Tests of VSHORADS Missile

One of the key features of the VSHORADS system is its optimal design, which prioritizes portability without compromising on performance.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful flight testing of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile.

Conducted on the 28th and 29th of February 2024, these tests marked a crucial step forward in bolstering India’s air defence capabilities. The tests, carried out from a ground-based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha, witnessed the interception and destruction of high-speed unmanned aerial targets under various scenarios, meeting all mission objectives with precision and efficacy.

The VSHORADS missile, a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD), is a testament to indigenous technological prowess, being designed and developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners.

Incorporating cutting-edge technologies, including a miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics, the missile has demonstrated its efficacy during the recent flight tests. Propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor, the VSHORADS missile is specifically designed to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, ensuring a robust defence shield for the nation.

One of the key features of the VSHORADS system is its optimal design, which prioritizes portability without compromising on performance. This aspect was evident during the tests, where the missile launcher showcased its ease of deployment and operation.

Witnessed by officials from the Indian Army, senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, and industry partners, the successful flight tests underscored the collaborative effort and dedication of all stakeholders involved in the project.

In recognition of this achievement, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh extended his heartfelt congratulations to DRDO, the Indian Army, and the industry partners involved in the successful development trials.

He emphasized that the incorporation of modern technologies in the VSHORADS missile would provide a significant technological boost to the Armed Forces, enhancing their operational capabilities and readiness to counter emerging threats.

Secretary DD R&D and Chairman DRDO also extended their congratulations to the entire team involved in the design and development of the VSHORADS missile.

Their commendation highlighted the tireless efforts and dedication of scientists, engineers, and technicians who worked tirelessly to realize this advanced air defence system.

The successful flight tests of the VSHORADS missile mark a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defence technology. With its cutting-edge capabilities and indigenous design, the VSHORADS system is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s air defence strategy, ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s airspace.
