In a remarkable celebration of strength and empowerment, the upcoming Republic Day parade in India is set to make history. This momentous event will take place along the prestigious Kartavya Path, symbolizing a new era of women’s participation in the nation’s defense forces.

Major Srishti Khullar, a paratrooper and an eye surgeon, embodies the spirit of versatility and dedication. In a recent interview, she shared her unique experience of transitioning from the precision of an operation theatre to the grandeur of leading a contingent in the Republic Day parade. “Being an eye surgeon, I have been used to holding a surgical knife.

Now, holding a sword at Kartavya Path has been a very challenging but very rewarding experience. I am very happy and very grateful,” Khullar expressed, reflecting her journey of diverse roles.

Furthermore, the Delhi Police is also set to showcase its first all-women contingent, led by IPS officer Shweta K. Sugathan. This contingent, comprising 194 female constables and head constables, primarily hails from Northeast India, highlighting the diverse representation within the force.

In addition to these, the tri-services contingent, for the first time, will be led by women officers. Captain Sharanya Rao of the Indian Army, who will lead the Army component, shared her pride in this groundbreaking initiative. “I am the supernumerary officer and will be leading the Army component of the tri-services contingent… Since the theme this year is ‘Nari Shakti’, many women-led contingents are taking part,” Rao stated, emphasizing the focus on women’s empowerment in this year’s parade.

An exceptional highlight of the parade is the participation of a couple, Major Jerry Blaize and Captain Supreetha CT, who will be marching down the Kartavya Path together, each representing different regiments. This unique occurrence not only symbolizes the spirit of togetherness but also reflects the evolving dynamics in the armed forces.

The Republic Day parade of 2024, therefore, is not just a display of military might but a celebration of ‘Nari Shakti’ (women’s power), showcasing the pivotal role of women in every sphere, including the defense services. It stands as a testament to the breaking of traditional barriers and the creation of inclusive spaces within the armed forces. Major Srishti Khullar and her fellow women officers are not just marching on a path; they are paving the way for future generations of women in uniform.
