Is it the 76th or 77th Independence Day? Correct Answer Here

India achieved freedom on August 15, 1947. As stated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), 2023 will mark the 77th Independence Day. But if you're counting anniversaries, it’s the 76th, as the first anniversary was observed in 1948.

76th or 77th Independence Day: On August 15, 1947, India broke free from the shackles of British colonialism that spanned over 200 years. This day marks India’s maiden voyage into sovereignty, leaving behind the oppressive British rule to emerge as a democratic nation.

Every year on this day, the Tricolour graces homes, establishments, and public spaces, while the strains of the national anthem reverberate throughout the country.

However, as the country gets draped in the hues of celebration, a question lingers: Is 2023 the 76th or 77th year of India’s Independence?

Independence Day 2023: 76th or 77th?

India achieved freedom on August 15, 1947. As stated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), 2023 will mark the 77th Independence Day. But if you’re counting anniversaries, it’s the 76th, as the first anniversary was observed in 1948.

Therefore, in 2023, India will commemorate its 77th Independence Day while celebrating the 76th anniversary of its independence.

Under the banner “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, the theme for this year’s Independence Day is “Nation First, Always First”. Numerous events leading up to August 15 have been organized, enriching the celebratory ambiance.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice-President of India, on August 11, initiated the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, embarking on a bike rally accompanied by MPs from Pragati Maidan.
