Though the Indian Military Academy Dehradun was founded only in 1932 to train officers for the Army, the Indian military leadership legacy is 5000 years old. The gentleman trained for now 75 years in this Institution are not only men of character, intellectual honesty  and strong moral fibre but are also influenced a great deal by ancient  India’s military traditions.
As the Indian society and polity evolved, military leaders have emerged since vedic times. Some came from outside and adopted India as their home, while some emerged from within. Traditions were evolved as great military leaders paved the way in leadership and great kings emerged to consolidate the territorial gains. A midst all this, Indians endeavored and succeeded in making war humane and civilized.
The two events that impacted the development of the Indian Army Officer at the IMA are the second world war and the Independence of India. During the war ‘Gentlemen Cadets’ of IMA became ‘Officers cadets’ and then back to ‘Gentlemen’ after it was over. Just what does this term “Gentleman Cadet” signify? Encompassing as it does, the attributes of outward and inner self, it also includes not lying , cheating or stealing besides cultural refinement. It is centered primarily on gentlemanly conduct and appearance. This of course, translates into dress, food habits and other social mores that made one belong to the  brotherhood of Arms. Therefore, the focus at the IMA has always remained on nurturing leaders who have the steel, valor and wisdom to be officers while retaining the compassion, understanding and chivalry characteristics of a gentleman.
