In a notable development, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has reached out to his Nepali counterpart, urging the revival of Gorkha recruitment into the Indian Army. This significant step seeks to restore a long-standing tradition paused due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent concerns over India’s Agnipath recruitment scheme.
Addressing the matter, General Dwivedi stated, “I have personally requested the Nepal Army chief to revive the recruitment of the ethnic Gorkha community in the Indian Army. I am very hopeful that it will resume sooner than later.”
The recruitment of Gorkhas has been a hallmark of the military ties between India and Nepal, rooted in the 1947 tripartite agreement among India, Nepal, and the UK. Renowned for their courage and loyalty, Gorkhas have been an integral part of the Indian Army’s regiments since India’s independence.
The recruitment process was halted in 2020 due to the global health crisis caused by Covid-19. However, the pause extended further when Nepal raised concerns about India’s Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022. The scheme brought significant changes to military recruitment, offering short-term service for four years without the traditional benefits such as pensions or gratuity, creating apprehensions in Nepal regarding the terms of service for Gorkha soldiers.
The prolonged hiatus has resulted in a manpower gap within the prestigious Gorkha regiments, impacting their operational strength and historical traditions. These regiments, known for their exceptional contributions in both peacekeeping missions and combat scenarios, have been feeling the absence of fresh Nepali recruits keenly.
The resumption of Gorkha recruitment is expected to address these challenges while reinforcing the historical and military ties between the two nations. The move would not only fill the personnel shortage but also ensure the continuation of the Gorkhas’ proud legacy in the Indian Army.
General Dwivedi’s appeal reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to upholding this tradition and revitalizing the unique bond shared with Nepal through the Gorkha soldiers’ service. A resolution to this issue would symbolize a strengthened partnership and a renewed chapter in the enduring military cooperation between the two neighboring nations.
