Hyderabad is set to witness a spectacular aerial display as the Suryakiran aerobatic team of the Indian Air Force (IAF) prepares to perform a riveting show over the scenic Hussainsagar Lake this Sunday from 3 PM to 5 PM. Led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, a seasoned Su-30 MKI pilot, the Suryakiran team, also known as SKAT, promises to captivate audiences with an array of stunning aerobatic maneuvers, including loops, rolls, crosses, and inverted flying.
This airshow is part of the Indian Air Force Outreach Programme, aimed at showcasing the exceptional skills and professionalism of the IAF. The event is expected to draw a large crowd, providing a memorable experience for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. Attendees can keep up with the latest updates and engage with the team through various social media platforms including Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube.
Established in 1996, the Suryakiran aerobatic team boasts the distinction of being the only nine-aircraft aerobatic team in Asia, and one of the elite few worldwide. Over the years, the team has completed more than 700 displays across India, and it has proudly represented the IAF at international air shows in countries such as China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and the UAE.
The Suryakiran team consists of nine Hawk Mk 132 aircraft that perform in breathtaking formations at remarkably close distances of just 5 meters apart. The team comprises 12 adept pilots who have honed their skills through rigorous training to master complex flying techniques. Alongside Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, the Deputy Leader is Group Captain Sidhesh Kartik, with other notable pilots including Squadron Leaders Jasdeep Singh, Himkhush Chandel, Ankit Vashisth, Vishnu, Diwakar Sharma, Gaurav Patel, and several Wing Commanders including Rajesh Kajla, Arjun Patel, Kuldeep Hooda, and Allen George. The technical support team is led by Wing Commander Abhimanyu Tyagi, Squadron Leader Sandeep Dhayal, and Flight Lieutenant Manil Sharma, while Flight Lieutenant Kanwal Sandhu serves as the commentator and administrator, with Squadron Leader Sudharshan as the team doctor.
The motto “Sadaiva Sarvottam,” which translates to “Always the Best,” embodies the spirit of excellence that defines the Suryakiran team. Their dedication to perfection and collaboration is evident in the flawless execution of their complex aerial performances.
The aircraft used by the team, the Hawk Mk 132, is an advanced jet trainer designed to provide fighter flying training to new IAF pilots. Proudly manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the aircraft showcases the advancements in the country’s aviation industry. Recently, the Hawk Mk 132s have undergone significant enhancements, including the integration of smoke pods capable of producing vivid colored smoke. Developed at the Indian Air Force’s Base Repair Depot in Nashik, this modification allows the team to artistically paint the sky with the colors of the national flag—saffron, white, and green—during their performances.
This new development not only enhances the visual spectacle of the displays but also serves as a powerful symbol of national pride, reflecting India’s progress and capabilities in aerospace engineering and innovation. As the Suryakiran team takes to the skies over Hussainsagar, spectators can look forward to an awe-inspiring display of skill, precision, and patriotism.
