The Indian Navy recently held a grand operational demonstration at Puri Beach, showcasing its technological capabilities and human expertise during the Navy Day celebrations. The event was attended by President Droupadi Murmu, marking a notable occasion as it was only the second time the Indian Navy hosted such a large-scale event away from a major naval base.
The demonstration featured a naval armada with a combined tonnage of 90,000 tonnes, equipped with advanced weaponry and sensors designed to neutralize threats from various sources, including surface, subsurface, and aerial targets within a 300-kilometer radius. Over 3,500 personnel participated in the event, with an additional 350 coordinating activities from the shore. Aerial performances were a highlight, with fifteen ships, more than thirty-seven aircraft, submarines, and marine commandos involved in the operation, alongside contributions from the Indian Army.
The high-energy demonstration commenced with an impressive display by the Hawk AJT fighter aircraft, also known as ‘Phantoms,’ which executed a remarkable ‘bomb burst’ maneuver. Following this, Chetak aircraft participated in a fly-past, carrying the national flag and the Naval Ensign. The stealth submarine INS Shalki made a dramatic entrance from the Bay of Bengal, adding to the spectacle. Elite MARCOS commandos descended from helicopters and conducted a simulated rescue operation, showcasing their skills in a dramatic fashion.
The operational display also included an amphibious assault demonstration executed in conjunction with the Indian Army, catching the attention of attendees. A platoon of the mechanized infantry showcased combat techniques, including a box formation maneuver under simulated enemy fire. In addition to this, the event featured a thrilling combat free fall with parachutists joining the display.
The ceremony concluded with traditional performances, including the Hornpipe dance and the ceremonial beating of the retreat, providing an appropriate climax to the impressive exhibition. The event was well attended, with notable figures including the Governor Raghubar Dash and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.
In her remarks, President Droupadi Murmu praised the operational demonstration, highlighting the capabilities of the Indian Navy. She emphasized that India’s geographical positioning supports its potential as a formidable maritime nation. She expressed confidence that the Indian Navy would continue to ensure maritime security as the country aims for transformation towards a “Vikshit Bharat” by the year 2047.
President Murmu acknowledged the Indian Navy’s crucial role over the past year in various operational activities, including ensuring the safety of seafarers, securing maritime trade routes, providing humanitarian assistance, and combating drug trafficking that funds terrorism. She noted that the exhibition of advanced technology, tactical acumen, and operational courage reflected the Navy’s evolution into a combat-ready and future-ready force.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi also spoke on the achievements and status elevation of the Indian Navy, highlighting the ongoing circumnavigation mission of INS Tarini, which is currently being sailed by two young women officers.
