Importance of having a correct way of speaking

In SSB many tasks are there where your speaking skills count. Beginning from day 1, i.e. the screening procedure itself, you need to have a good speaking skill. In stage 1 testing itself, you are required to participate in a GD, narrate your own story etc.
It demands a good speaking style. Then when you proceed to stage 2 testing also, there are a number of places you need to have  a good way of speaking. You have to participate in GD, where again you need to have a good voice. There is lecturette which is like an extempore speech, of course you need to have an impressive way of speaking here. Then you have to face the interview, where of course you need it.

An officer has to command a troop of soldiers, he/she is responsible for motivating them, boosting their confidence. Most importantly they should be able to communicate what all is there in their mind, and speech is the most important way of communication. So here is the importance of having good speaking skills.

How to get it?

There are a lot of things which count when it comes to speaking:

  • Tone: It should be not very rude, not very feeble, just a perfect firm one.
  • Pitch: You voice shouldn’t hurt the other person’s ear. For people having high pitched voice, do not speak very loudly.
  • Loudness: You need to be perfectly audible to your audience
  • Modulation: Nobody likes a monotonous tone, you need to modulate your voice with the grammar in the sentence, pause, stop, highlight important things.
  • Speed: The speed should be just right. Do not be a jet and neither a snail while speaking
  • Gestures: Too many gestures are not good.

You cannot achieve a perfect voice and style within a day. You need to work on it for a long duration of time. You can start by practicing the voice in 5 levels. Shout 1, 2 ,3 ,4 and 5 in different levels. 1 with the loudness that the person sitting next to you can hear you and 5 so that a person 30 meters away can hear you. Cover the rest in between. To improve your speed, start reading loudly. This will modulate your voice also. Remember that the modulation needs to come naturally otherwise it’ll sound very made up and fake. Another very important thing about speaking is eye contact. When you do not make an eye contact you lose audience. So start practicing. Time yourself, to control your speed. Speak about 150 words in one minute for a perfect speed. Speaking slow is always better than speaking fast, because it gives you some additional time to think also.
