A total of 21 Param Veer Chakraโ€™s have been awarded since Independence. Its first recipient was Major Somnath Sharma. Here is a list of all the winners of PVC, the real heroes of India:

Courage in facilitating advance on Rajouri in 1948.

Saved his picket from enemy in defence of Naushahra.

Led his regiment and captured Jassoran and Butur-Dograndi in 1965 War.

Charged Enemy bunker, bayoneted two enemy soldiers, continued inspite injury to destroy bunkers.

Showing grit and courage to destroy enemy bunker

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (NP)

Indian Army-13th Battalion J & K Rifles

Showed exception valor in capturing point 4875 in 1999 Kargil War.

Captain Vikram Batra (P)

July 1999

Indian Army-13th Battalion J & K Rifles

Single-handedly killed three enemy soldiers in close combat inspite of being seriously injured during this, inspired his men to continue with the mission.

Note:

  • P stands for Posthumous and NP stands for Non-Posthumous.
  • Out of the 21 awardees only 7 are non-posthumous awardees. The last PVC was given in 1999 to Captain Vikram Batra.
